Plasterboard is gypsum, and when gypsum is buried with biodegradable waste it produces hydrogen sulphide. For that reason gypsum-based waste must not be sent to a landfill cell that accepts biodegradable waste, and the old allowance for a small amount of board in a mixed load was withdrawn in 2009. Any identifiable plasterboard in a load now has to be kept separate by law.
Plasterboard is not hazardous waste, but it is landfill-restricted, which is why a mixed skip with board in it can be refused or surcharged at the transfer station. Keeping the board on its own protects the price of both loads and lets the gypsum go for recovery instead of disposal.
A dedicated plasterboard skip is priced whether you fill it or not, sits on site for days, and needs a council permit if the only space is the public road; Neath Port Talbot Council charges £59 for a 28 day skip permit. A collection is quoted to the quantity that actually leaves, we do the loading, and nothing stands on the highway.
For most trade quantities in Neath, Port Talbot and Swansea a collection works out cheaper and quicker. If a build produces board steadily, repeat collections at first and second fix keep the site clear without a skip taking up the drive.
Householders in Neath Port Talbot can take plasterboard to the Briton Ferry recycling centre on Briton Ferry Industrial Estate, where it is weighed and charged at £141.17 per tonne as chargeable waste. Every visit must be booked in advance, vans and pick-ups need a permit that is limited to twelve a year, tipper and flatbed vans are not allowed on site, and trade waste is not accepted.
That makes the tip a workable route for a couple of sheets from a DIY job and an awkward one for anything larger. For a van load, or any board from paid work, a booked collection is the straightforward answer: we load it, weigh nothing at a gate, and send it for gypsum recovery with a waste transfer note for your records.
