Think in bin bags rather than cubic yards. A 4 yard skip, the size most people call a mini skip, takes 40 to 50 bin bags and suits a garden tidy, a shed clear-out or a single-room refit. A 6 yard skip, the midi skip, takes 60 to 70 bags and covers a kitchen or bathroom rip-out with room to spare. An 8 yard skip, the builders skip, takes 70 to 80 bags and is the one for renovation waste and trade jobs.
If the job is heavy rather than bulky, say soil, rubble or hardcore, tell us on the enquiry: dense loads are sized to what the vehicle can lift, not just what fits in the skip. Every skip is quoted to the job, so there is no charge for asking.
A skip on your own drive or land needs no permit. A skip on the public road needs a permit from the council for that road, and under the Highways Act 1980 the permit is the skip owner's responsibility, so we apply for it and include the fee and the lead time in your quote. Fees are set by each council and change yearly; these are the figures at the time of writing.

Certain waste needs special handling to comply with environmental legislation. Our team advises on every borderline item, so nothing gets refused at collection.
Upholstered seating is exempt from standard skips; the man and van service is the compliant route.
Hazardous waste is not accepted; the office will point each of these to its proper route.

Garden clearances fill a 4 yard skip faster than people expect: hedge cuttings, turf, an old fence and the contents of a shed soon add up, and a skip on the drive lets you work at your own pace over a weekend. Soil and turf are heavy, so mention them when you book.
For a kitchen or bathroom refit the 6 yard skip takes the units, tiles, old flooring and packaging in one hire. Trade customers and site managers usually take the 8 yard skip for strip-out and renovation waste, with a swap-over booked when the first one fills. Commercial skip hire is quoted the same way as domestic: size, placement, duration and any permit.
A skip is the right call when waste builds up over days and you are happy to load it yourself. If you would rather not lift, or there is nowhere to put a skip, a man and van clearance is priced by the load and the crew carries everything out. For a small DIY job on a drive, a skip bag is cheaper than a skip and needs no permit.
