Merthyr Tydfil is the furthest town we list, reached from Neath along the A465 Heads of the Valleys road, and we serve it by arrangement rather than on a daily round. We deliver three skip sizes to Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 and CF48. The 4 yard mini skip holds roughly 40 to 50 bin bags, which is right for a terrace bathroom or kitchen strip-out. On the narrow-fronted terraces of Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Vale, Penydarren and Dowlais, where there is little off-street parking and no rear access, a skip on the street is often impractical, and the man and van service or a skip bag is the alternative.
Our man and van rubbish removal is priced by the load and includes VAT. A mattress alone is £25, a single item is £40, two items are £50 and a fridge or fridge freezer is £40. Van loads start with a 2 yard load at £50, around 20 bin bags, the most booked 6 yard load is £110, and a 14 yard load for a small house or flat clearance is £220.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council runs a bulky item collection of up to nine items per booking, arranged online or on 01685 725000. Metal items and white goods such as cookers, washing machines, fridges and bed frames are collected free, while armchairs, sofas, mattresses, carpets, baths and wardrobes are chargeable, with the charge shown before you pay. Items must be outside the property by 7am on the day and no earlier than the night before.
Where the council is free it is worth using. Where it charges, or where the items are inside a terrace with a steep staircase, we carry them out ourselves, and we take the mixed loads, bags and building waste that the council service does not.
A skip bag, sometimes called a Hippo bag (a trademark), suits the steep valley streets and small front yards of CF48 where a skip will not go. A small bag is £65 inc VAT and a medium bag is £95 inc VAT, collection included, with no permit and no delivery lorry.
You fill the bag as the job goes along and we collect it on our next Merthyr run. Place it on a yard, a drive or private ground within reach of the van. Bags are for household, garden and light DIY waste; rubble and soil are better in a skip or priced as a van load.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council runs two household recycling centres. Dowlais HRC at The Bont, Gellifaelog Old Road, CF48 3DA is the nearest to the town centre and is closed on Tuesdays. Aberfan HRC on Aberfan Road, CF48 4QE serves the southern villages and is closed on Wednesdays. Opening hours change between summer and winter, so check the council website before you go.
Proof of address is needed to enter either site, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not allowed, and commercial vehicles and trailers need a permit. If you have no car, no permit or a job that will not fit in a boot, we take the load instead, sort it at a licensed transfer station and leave you the waste transfer note.
Merthyr's housing is dominated by terraces from its years as an iron and coal town, with Victorian and Edwardian cottages in the valley villages and large post-war estates at Gurnos and Gellideg. Older stock means renovation waste: plaster, carpets, old bathrooms and kitchens, and the furniture that goes with them. We run full and part house clearances, probate and downsizing work, and end-of-tenancy and void clearances for landlords and housing associations.
