We bring skip hire, skip bags and man and van waste removal from £25 inc VAT to Ystradgynlais and the Upper Swansea Valley, from Ystalyfera and Cwmtwrch to Abercrave, about 25 minutes up the valley from our yard at Jersey Marine. Ystradgynlais is the second largest town in Powys and sits at the top of the Swansea Valley on the county line with Neath Port Talbot. We serve it with the same four services we run at home: man and van waste removal from £25 inc VAT, 4, 6 and 8 yard skip hire, skip bags from £65 inc VAT and wheelie bin hire for businesses. The town's mix of miners' terraces and newer estates keeps all four in use.
We are a registered waste carrier with Natural Resources Wales, prices include VAT, and we aim to collect within 48 hours of booking. The run up the A4067 from Jersey Marine takes about 25 minutes, so Ystradgynlais fits into our regular rounds.
Skip hire in Ystradgynlais comes in three sizes. The 4 yard mini skip holds around 40 to 50 bin bags for a bathroom or a garden tidy. The 6 yard midi skip, our most hired, holds 60 to 70 bin bags and covers a terrace kitchen rip-out. The 8 yard builders skip holds 70 to 80 bin bags for a garden and garage cleared together or a full renovation. Skips are quoted on request.
On a drive no permit is needed. On the public road the permit depends on which council owns the street: Ystradgynlais town is Powys County Council, so check the council website for the current fee and process, while Ystalyfera and part of Cwmtwrch are Neath Port Talbot Council, where a permit is £59 for 28 days. We can advise on which applies to your address.
On the tighter terraced streets near the Welfare Hall a skip bag or a van collection usually avoids the question altogether.
Our man and van rubbish removal is priced by the load and includes VAT. A mattress on its own is £25, a single item is £40, two items are £50 and a fridge or fridge freezer is £40. Van loads run from a 2 yard load at £50, about 20 bin bags, through the most booked 6 yard load at £110 to a 14 yard load at £220 for a small house clearance. A man with a van is the right tool for a terrace with on-street parking only.
Powys County Council's bulky waste collection was £38.50 for up to three standard items at the time of writing, for householders only, with a three-piece suite counting as three items and a table and four chairs as five; check the council website for the current fee. On the Neath Port Talbot side of SA9 the equivalent is £29.50 for up to seven items. Both are kerbside services, and neither takes trade waste or bags of general rubbish.
We lift from inside, take mixed loads, and work for landlords and businesses as well as householders. Two of us attend every job and we sweep up before we leave.
A skip bag, sometimes called a Hippo bag (a trademark), is made for the terraces of Ystradgynlais. Many of the older streets on the island between the River Tawe and the Swansea Canal have on-street parking only, so a bag in the back lane or front yard avoids a road permit and a wasted skip slot. A small bag is £65 inc VAT and a medium bag is £95 inc VAT, collection included.
Fill it as you go and we send the van to collect it. It needs to sit on private ground the van can reach. Household, garden and light DIY waste are fine; rubble and soil are better in a skip.
There is no site called Ystradgynlais Recycling Centre. The facility locals mean is Lower Cwmtwrch Household Recycling Centre on Bethel Road, Lower Cwmtwrch, SA9 2HW, which Powys runs for south-west Powys and also opens to Neath Port Talbot residents. It is open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 5pm and at weekends from 10am to 4pm, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and a slot must be booked before you visit, with proof of address required at the gate.
If there is no slot, no car or simply too much for a boot, we do the tip run instead. The load is sorted at a licensed transfer station and the waste transfer note stays with you as proof of correct disposal.
Ystradgynlais grew around the Ynyscedwyn Ironworks and the anthracite pits, and the 1872 chimney and winding gear survive in the heritage park beside the houses. The oldest homes are dense terraces, from Gough's Buildings onwards, and they generate renovation waste, old sheds and steep back gardens that need clearing by hand. The newer side is a run of estates: 117 net new homes between 2011 and 2024, seven allocated sites with capacity for around 400 more, plus a site at Abercrave, which bring turf, fencing, packaging and landscaping waste.
The other local quirk is the boundary. SA9 covers Ystradgynlais in Powys and Ystalyfera and part of Cwmtwrch in Neath Port Talbot, so two addresses a few hundred metres apart can have different bulky waste prices and different recycling rules. We work on both sides of the line at the same prices. We also clear flats and voids, including the Penybryn area, for landlords and housing providers.
Ystradgynlais's main employment site is Woodlands Business Park, SA9 1JW, at the A4067 roundabout on the former watch factory land, with smaller units on Ynyscedwyn Industrial Estate, SA9 1DT, and Gurnos Industrial Estate at Ystalyfera, SA9 2JA. For these units, the shops in the town centre and holiday lets up the valley towards Dan yr Ogof and Craig y Nos, we supply 240 litre, 660 litre and 1100 litre wheelie bins with scheduled collections and one-off clearances.
Business waste needs a registered carrier and a waste transfer note, and we provide both with every lift. A regular round is practical at 25 minutes from the yard, even for a single small premises.
Ystradgynlais is 14.5 miles and about 25 minutes from our yard at Jersey Marine, up the A474 through Pontardawe and on to the A4067, or up the M4 to junction 45 and the A4067 the whole way. We cover the town and the villages around it on both sides of the county boundary.
