Skip hire, man and van rubbish removal from £25 inc VAT, skip bags and wheelie bin hire for Pontardawe, Alltwen, Rhos, Trebanos and the Swansea Valley, about 18 minutes up the A474 from our yard at Jersey Marine. We are a registered waste carrier and we aim to collect within 48 hours of booking.
Pontardawe sits at the heart of the Swansea Valley, with St Peter's Church and its spire above the canal, the Cross at the centre and terraced streets on the valley floor giving way to hillside estates in Rhos, Alltwen and Trebanos. That mix shapes the jobs we are asked to do across SA8: sofas, mattresses and white goods out of terraces with no rear access, renovation waste from older houses, garden clearances on sloping plots, and cardboard and packaging from the units on Alloy Industrial Estate.
We cover all of it with four services. Man and van rubbish removal from £25 inc VAT for anything we can carry out of a house, garage or garden; 4, 6 and 8 yard skip hire for renovation and building waste; skip bags from £65 inc VAT where a skip will not fit; and 240, 660 and 1100 litre wheelie bin hire for businesses. House clearances, garden clearances and commercial clearances are all priced by volume, with the price agreed before we lift anything.
We deliver 4, 6 and 8 yard skips across Pontardawe and the villages around it. A 4 yard skip holds roughly 40 to 50 bin bags and suits a bathroom rip-out or a small garden project. A 6 yard skip takes 60 to 70 bin bags and is the usual choice for a kitchen refit. An 8 yard skip holds 70 to 80 bin bags and handles a kitchen and a garden together, or the heavier end of a renovation in one of the older terraces around Herbert Street and High Street.
A skip on your own drive needs no permit. A skip on the public road does, and in Pontardawe that permit comes from Neath Port Talbot Council: the current fee is £59 for 28 days, applications are typically processed within three to five working days, and each location is inspected. Herbert Street and Grove Road carry waiting restrictions, so a road placement there needs thought. If you are in Clydach, you are across the boundary in Swansea Council territory, where a permit is £58 for 28 days and must be applied for at least 24 hours before the skip goes down. On the steeper estates in Rhos, Alltwen and Trebanos, the roads are narrow and many drives slope, so a full-size skip is not always practical. In those cases a skip bag or a man and van visit is often the better answer, and we will say so when we quote.
Our man and van service is priced by the load, and every price includes VAT and the loading. A single item such as a small sofa or an appliance is £40. A mattress on its own is £25 and a fridge on its own is £40. Loads then run from a 2 yard load at £50, roughly a 4x4 boot full, up through a 6 yard load at £110 and an 8 yard load at £130 to a 14 yard load at £220, which is a small house or flat clearance. We carry from inside the property, the garage or the garden, not just the kerb.
That matters in Pontardawe because Neath Port Talbot Council's bulky items collection is kerbside only. The council charges £29.50 for up to seven items, booked and paid in advance online, with collections starting from 6am until 2pm and items left out the night before. Crews do not enter the property, and the service does not take garden waste, sheds, fence panels, bags of rubbish, mirrors, building waste, toilets, baths, tiles, pallets or paint tins. It also cannot be used for house clearances and is not offered to businesses or landlords.
If your items are on that list, or you cannot get them to the kerb, or you simply want them gone this week rather than on a council date, we are the alternative. We aim to collect within 48 hours of booking, and Pontardawe is 11.4 miles from our yard, so a Swansea Valley run is a normal part of our week.
A skip bag is the middle option between a van visit and a skip. We drop the bag, you fill it at your own pace, and we collect it when you call. A small bag is £65 inc VAT and a medium bag is £95 inc VAT, collection included. No permit is needed because the bag sits on your drive, your front or a corner of the garden rather than on the road.
Skip bags suit the terraces around the canal, Herbert Street, Dynevor Terrace and Grove Road, where the rear lane is too tight for a skip lorry and the front has room for a bag but not a metal skip. They also suit the flats above the shops on Herbert Street when a landlord is turning a tenancy around and wants somewhere to put the old carpet and furniture while the work goes on.
There is no council recycling centre in Pontardawe itself. Neath Port Talbot Council's current list is Briton Ferry, Cymmer and Lower Cwmtwrch, and all three need a pre-booked slot. For Pontardawe residents the two realistic options are Lower Cwmtwrch, on Bethel Road SA9 2HW up the valley, and Briton Ferry, on Briton Ferry Industrial Estate SA11 2HZ down the A474.
Lower Cwmtwrch is run by Powys and open to Neath Port Talbot residents: Monday, Thursday and Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, booked through the Powys website with proof of your NPT address. Briton Ferry is open 8.30am to 5pm seven days a week, booking required. Vans and pick-ups need a permit there, residents are limited to 12 van permits a year, and tipper or flatbed vans are not allowed on site.
The council's fortnightly refuse rule is one wheeled bin or up to three black bags per collection; excess bags are not taken. Between a booking-only tip that is closed two weekdays, a permit cap on vans and a bin that only takes so much, a private collection is often the practical way to clear a loft, a garage or a renovation in one go.
Pontardawe grew around the Primrose Forge and tinplate works at Ynysderw from the 1840s, and the town's housing still tells that story: Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the canal and along High Street, inter-war and post-war estates on the slopes in Rhos, Alltwen and Trebanos, and newer private estates and infill on top. Parc Ynysderw, with the leisure centre and Cwmtawe Community School, stands on the old steel and tinplate works site.
For us that means renovation waste from older houses (plaster, tiles, old kitchens and bathroom suites) that the council bulky service will not touch, large hillside gardens with sheds and fence panels to clear, and end-of-tenancy and landlord clearances for the flats on Herbert Street and Dynevor Terrace. Regeneration schemes such as Ty Mawr on Ynysderw Road and the Parc Hadau housing scheme add void clearances and moving-in packaging to the list. There is no student market in Pontardawe, so our work here is families, landlords and older residents downsizing.
Pontardawe has more commercial activity than its size suggests. Alloy Industrial Estate off the A4067, with Alloy Court, Alltacham Drive and Cwmtawe Business Park on Tawe Terrace, houses builders' merchants, energy contractors and manufacturers, and a further 15 light industrial units are planned on the former foundry site north of Old Foundry Road. Glanrhyd Industrial Estate is a separate riverside estate, and Pontardawe Retail Park on Ynysderw Road sits alongside Lidl and the Tesco superstore at Gwyns Drift in Alltwen.
We supply 240, 660 and 1100 litre wheelie bins on a scheduled collection for units, shops and cafes, and we clear whole units, offices and back-of-house storage as a one-off. Every commercial collection comes with a waste transfer note so your duty of care paperwork is in order. Herbert Street shops and the retail park's cardboard and packaging are the everyday end of that work; the new units north of Old Foundry Road are the fit-out and start-up end.
