Seven Sisters, Neath, known in Welsh as Blaendulais, is a colliery village on the A4109 Inter Valley Road near the top of the Dulais Valley, in the SA10 9 postcode area and under Neath Port Talbot Council, in the same SA10 district as our own yard. Mynydd-y-Drum rises above the village and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park begins to the north. We estimate the drive from Jersey Marine at about 12 miles and about 18 minutes, and we aim to collect within 48 hours of booking.
We bring the full range to the top of the valley. We deliver three skip sizes up the A4109. A 4 yard skip, the mini skip, holds 40 to 50 bin bags and suits a bathroom rip-out. A 6 yard skip, the midi skip, holds 60 to 70 bin bags and is the usual choice for a kitchen refit. An 8 yard skip, the builders skip, holds 70 to 80 bin bags and covers a full kitchen and garden together. Sizes are in cubic yards, and we quote the price for your address when you book.
Placement is the practical question in Seven Sisters. Brynbedd Terrace, Brynhyfryd Terrace, Heol y Felin and Dulais Road are tight colliery-era terraces with on-street parking and often no rear access, so a skip there usually has to sit on the highway. A skip on the public road needs a permit from Neath Port Talbot Council at £59 for 28 days, typically processed within three to five working days. Homes with a drive on the later estates and around Ysticlau Park can take a skip without one.
We will tell you whether your placement needs a permit before we confirm the hire. Where the street is too narrow or the parking too precious, a skip bag or a man and van collection does the same job.
For most homes in Seven Sisters a two-person crew loading from the house beats a skip. Our man and van rubbish removal prices include VAT and the loading: a mattress on its own is £25, a single item such as a small sofa or an appliance is £40, two items are £50 and a fridge or fridge freezer is £40. Mixed loads run from a 2 yard load at £50, roughly a 4x4 boot full, through a 6 yard load at £110 to a 14 yard load at £220 for a small house or flat clearance.
Neath Port Talbot Council offers a bulky items collection at £29.50 for up to 7 items, booked and paid in advance. It is kerbside only: items go out the night before, collections run from 6am to 2pm and the crew does not enter the property. It excludes garden waste, sheds, fence panels, bags of rubbish and building waste, and it cannot be used for house clearances or by landlords.
For a few listed items at the kerb the council is good value. When the job is a loft, a renovation rip-out of plaster and carpets, a garden below the mountain or a whole house, a man with a van from Vale Waste Neath carries it from where it stands and takes the mixed load in one visit.
Skip bags, sometimes called a Hippo bag (a trademark), are the answer for the small front gardens and short drives of Seven Sisters where a skip would block the street. A small skip bag is £65 inc VAT and a medium skip bag is £95 inc VAT. We deliver it folded, you fill it as the job goes on and we collect it when you call.
Because the bag sits on your own land there is no council permit, no parking lost outside a terrace and no lorry needing to turn in a narrow street. It is cheaper than a skip and it suits a bathroom rip-out, a fitted kitchen coming out in stages, a shed being taken down or the tail end of a house clearance.
Bags do not take hardcore or soil, mattresses, tyres or fridges. We price those by item on a man and van collection.
Neath Port Talbot Council collects recycling weekly with no limit. Residual refuse is limited to one wheelie bin or three black bags a fortnight, side waste is not collected, and the side waste exemption scheme covers genuine cases only. Those three bags are where most valley households hit the wall.
There is no tip in the Dulais Valley. The nearest council site is Briton Ferry Recycling Centre, Briton Ferry Industrial Estate, SA11 2HZ, open 8.30am to 5pm seven days a week, closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and a slot must be booked before you visit. Vans, pick-ups and double-axle trailers need a permit limited to 12 a year, tipper and flatbed vans are not allowed on site, and building-type waste beyond three sacks a week is weighed and charged, card only. Lower Cwmtwrch Recycling Centre, run by Powys and open to Neath Port Talbot residents with proof of address, is the other option from the top of the valley.
A tip run from Seven Sisters means the whole length of the A4109 down to Aberdulais and on to Briton Ferry, a booked slot and a permit if you have borrowed a van. For a boot of recycling that is fine. For a renovation, a loft or a full clearance, one collection from us replaces the lot.
Seven Sisters did not exist before the colliery was sunk in 1872, and the pit shaped everything that followed, from Brick Row, the first single-storey terrace, to the later rows on Brynbedd Terrace, Brynhyfryd Terrace, Heol y Felin and Martyns Avenue built for colliers, brickworkers and railway workers. The colliery closed in 1963, and the Canolfan housing and Ysticlau Park now stand on its site, with St Mary's Church from 1911, Khartoum Park on the reclaimed tip, the community hall and library and Seven Sisters RFC at Maes Dafydd making up the village around them.
That history gives us a clear picture of the work. Late 19th and early 20th century terraces produce renovation rip-outs of plaster, fitted kitchens and carpets, loft and shed clearances after decades in one family, and bereavement, probate and downsizing house clearances for an older population. We handle those with care, separate what can be reused and provide a waste transfer note for the rest. Landlords turning round a terrace get the same service with paperwork for each property.
Gardens on the slopes below Mynydd-y-Drum grow fast and are hard to clear by hand, so we take cuttings, soil, old fencing and sheds the council green sacks will not. For businesses, Nant y Cafn Business Park at the junction of Dulais Road and the A4109, the RFC clubhouse, and the shops and pubs on the main road use us for wheelie bin hire with scheduled collections and one-off unit clearances.
Our route is the A465 north from Jersey Marine to Aberdulais, then the A4109 up through Crynant to Seven Sisters, which we estimate at about 18 minutes. The villages above and below it are covered on the same run, and further up the valleys by arrangement.
No. Vale Waste Neath is a private, family-run, licensed waste carrier registered with Natural Resources Wales. We are not Neath Port Talbot Council and we do not run the bin rounds, so we cannot tell you your bin day or sort out a missed collection.
Bin days, the bulky items booking and recycling centre slots are all on the Neath Port Talbot Council website. When the pile is bigger than three bags, includes garden or building waste, or needs carrying out of the house, that is our work, and every job comes with a waste transfer note.
