Crynant, Y Creunant in Welsh, is a former anthracite colliery village strung along the A4109 Inter Valley Road in the Dulais Valley, in the SA10 8 postcode area and under Neath Port Talbot Council, with Mynydd Marchywel to the west and Hirfynydd to the east. Our yard at Jersey Marine is 9.4 miles away, so we are on Main Road in about 13 minutes, and we aim to collect within 48 hours of booking.
We bring every service up the valley. Skip hire in 4, 6 and 8 yard sizes for terrace refits and conversions. Man and van rubbish removal from £25 inc VAT for furniture, white goods, garden waste and full house clearances, with our crew doing the carrying. Skip bags from £65 inc VAT for smaller jobs on tight plots, and wheelie bin hire in 240 litre, 660 litre and 1100 litre sizes with scheduled commercial waste collection for the units at Crynant Business Park.
A waste transfer note comes with every job so your duty of care is met, and as a licensed waste carrier we take the load to a permitted site rather than leaving it to chance on the mountain road.
Crynant skip hire is the phrase people in the valley search for, and we deliver three sizes to the village and to Cilfrew, Aberdulais and Seven Sisters along the same road. A 4 yard skip, the mini skip, takes 40 to 50 bin bags and suits a bathroom strip-out. A 6 yard skip, the midi skip, takes 60 to 70 bin bags and is the usual choice for a kitchen. An 8 yard skip, the builders skip, takes 70 to 80 bin bags and covers a full renovation. Sizes are in cubic yards and we quote the price for your address when you book.
Main Road, Pen-y-Bont Terrace and the side streets off them are narrow, with on-street parking and miners' terraces that open straight onto the pavement. A skip on a drive or in a yard needs no permit. A skip on the public road needs a permit from Neath Port Talbot Council, which costs £59 for 28 days and is typically processed within three to five working days. We will tell you whether your placement needs one before we confirm the hire.
Where a skip will not fit, or the permit wait does not suit the job, a skip bag on your own ground or a man and van collection does the same work without the paperwork.
Man and van rubbish removal is priced by the load and includes VAT and the loading. A mattress on its own is £25, a single item such as a small sofa or an appliance is £40, two items are £50 and a fridge or fridge freezer is £40. Mixed loads start at £50 for a 2 yard load, roughly a 4x4 boot full, and step up through a 6 yard load at £110 to £220 for a 14 yard load, about a small house or flat clearance.
Neath Port Talbot Council runs a bulky items collection at £29.50 for up to 7 items, booked and paid in advance. Items go to the kerb the night before and kept dry, the round runs from 6am to 2pm and the crew does not enter the property. Garden waste, sheds, fence panels, bags of rubbish and construction waste are excluded, and the service cannot be used for house clearances.
For a handful of listed items that is a good deal. For a chapel conversion strip-out, a loft full of a lifetime, or a garden that has run away up the hillside, a man with a van from Vale Waste Neath carries from wherever the waste is and takes the mixed load in one visit.
Skip bags, sometimes called a Hippo bag (a trademark), suit the kind of work the council planning lists show in Crynant: extensions on Neath Road, the conversion of the former Saron Independent Chapel on Main Road, and refits of the late Victorian terraces. A small skip bag is £65 inc VAT and a medium skip bag is £95 inc VAT, delivered folded, filled at your own pace and collected when you call.
A bag sits on your own land, so there is no permit, and it fits a small front plot or a yard with step access where a skip lorry could not drop. It is cheaper than a skip and it suits a bathroom rip-out, a fitted kitchen coming out in stages or a garage declutter.
Bags do not take hardcore or soil, mattresses, tyres or fridges. Book a man and van collection for those and we will price them by item.
Neath Port Talbot Council collects recycling weekly with no limit, but residual waste is fortnightly and limited to one wheelie bin or three black bags. Extra bags are stickered and left unless the household is on the side waste exemption scheme. Green garden waste sacks are collected fortnightly, for garden waste only.
There is no recycling centre in Crynant. Cefn Coed at the bottom of the village is a colliery museum, not a tip, and it is currently closed for maintenance. The nearest council site is Briton Ferry Recycling Centre, Briton Ferry Industrial Estate, SA11 2HZ, open 8.30am to 5pm seven days a week, closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. A pre-booked slot is required. Vans, pick-ups and double-axle trailers need a permit limited to 12 a year, tipper and flatbed vans are not allowed on site, and building-type waste beyond three sacks a week is weighed and charged, card only. Lower Cwmtwrch Recycling Centre, run by Powys and open to Neath Port Talbot residents with proof of address, is the other option for the upper valley.
A tip run from Crynant means the drive down the A4109 and the A465, a slot booked in advance and a van permit if you are borrowing a van. For a boot of recycling it is fine. For a renovation or a full clearance, one collection from us replaces the lot.
Crynant was built around the pits, and the Cefn Coed Colliery, once the deepest anthracite mine in the world, closed in 1968 before opening as a museum a decade later. The village that remains is a line of late 19th and early 20th century miners' terraces, semis and later infill along Main Road, Lewis Road, Neath Road, Nant Celyn and Pen Pentre, with the Crynant RFC ground and the primary school at its heart and about 1,900 people at the 2011 census.
There are no large new estates here. Planning records from 2023 to 2025 show extensions, infill and conversions, including the former Saron Independent Chapel on Main Road. That kind of work produces old pews and fittings, plaster and lath, fitted kitchens, carpets and the contents of long-settled homes, and it is the waste we clear most often in the Dulais Valley. Bereavement and downsizing house clearances follow the same pattern in a village where families have stayed for generations, and we handle them with care, separating what can be reused.
Gardens here climb the hillside, so we also clear overgrown plots, old sheds and greenhouses, soil, rubble and fence panels that the council green sacks will not take. Bin days, the bulky items booking and recycling centre slots are all on the Neath Port Talbot Council website. When the pile is bigger than three bags, includes garden or building waste, or needs carrying out of the house, that is our work, and every job comes with a waste transfer note.
