Cwmavon, written Cwmafan in Welsh, is a large village in the Afan Valley less than two miles north of Port Talbot, in the SA12 postcode district and under Neath Port Talbot Council. The River Afan runs through it, the B4286 carries the traffic along the valley floor and Foel Fynyddau rises above the northern edge. Our yard at Jersey Marine is 7.5 miles away, so we reach Depot Road in about 14 minutes and we aim to collect within 48 hours of booking.

Skip hire is the service Cwmavon searches for most, and the housing here suits it. Around two thirds of the homes are semi-detached or detached, and car ownership is above the borough average, which means most houses on Pantdu, Cae Glas and Penllyn have a drive where a skip can sit without a permit. Skip hire in Port Talbot and across the lower Afan Valley works the same way.
We deliver three sizes. A 4 yard skip, the mini skip, holds 40 to 50 bin bags and suits a bathroom strip-out or a garden clear. A 6 yard skip, the midi skip, holds 60 to 70 bin bags and is the usual choice for a kitchen refit. An 8 yard skip, the builders skip, holds 70 to 80 bin bags for bigger renovations. On the older terraced streets close to the B4286 and Depot Road a skip may have to go on the road, and a skip on the highway needs a permit from Neath Port Talbot Council at £59 for 28 days, typically processed within three to five working days. We will tell you whether your placement needs one before we confirm the hire, and a skip bag is the alternative where the street is too tight.
Our man and van rubbish removal prices are fixed and include VAT and the loading. A mattress on its own is £25, a single item such as a small sofa or an appliance is £40, two items are £50 and a fridge or fridge freezer is £40. Mixed loads run from a 2 yard load at £50, roughly a 4x4 boot full, through a 6 yard load at £110 to a 14 yard load at £220 for a small house or flat clearance.
Neath Port Talbot Council offers a bulky items collection at £29.50 for up to 7 items, booked and paid in advance. It is a kerbside service: items go out the night before, collections run from 6am to 2pm and the crew will not come inside. It excludes garden waste, sheds, fence panels, bags of rubbish and construction waste, it cannot be used for house clearances, and it is not offered to landlords or businesses.
For a few listed items left on the pavement the council price is fair. When the load is a shed and its contents, a garden full of cuttings, a garage clear-out or the whole of a house after a bereavement, a man with a van from Vale Waste Neath carries it all from where it stands.
Skip bags, sometimes called a Hippo bag (a trademark), are the middle ground between a few bags of rubbish and a full skip. A small skip bag is £65 inc VAT and a medium skip bag is £95 inc VAT. We deliver the bag folded, you fill it when you are ready and we collect it when you call.
A bag sits on your own drive or front garden, so there is no council permit and no need to give up the parking space outside a terrace. It is cheaper than a skip and it suits the kind of work we see across Cwmavon's estates: a bathroom rip-out, a fence panel replacement, a shed taken down, or the overflow from a tenancy change in one of the Tai Tarian or Coastal Housing properties.
Bags cannot take hardcore or soil, mattresses, tyres or fridges. Those go on a man and van collection, priced by item.
Neath Port Talbot Council collects recycling weekly with no limit. Residual refuse is fortnightly and limited to one wheelie bin or three black bags, and side waste is not collected under the excess waste restriction. That fortnightly limit is the point at which most Cwmavon households run out of options.
There is no recycling centre in the Afan Valley itself. The nearest council site is Briton Ferry Recycling Centre, Briton Ferry Industrial Estate, SA11 2HZ, open 8.30am to 5pm seven days a week, and Cymmer Recycling Centre on Margam Street, SA13 3EE, further up the valley on the A4107, is open 11am to 5pm seven days a week. Both need a booked slot before you visit. Vans, pick-ups and double-axle trailers need a permit limited to 12 a year, tipper and flatbed vans are not allowed on site, and building-type waste beyond three sacks a week is weighed and charged, card only.
If you have a car and a boot of recycling, book a slot and go. If you have a hired van, a trailer load of rubble or plasterboard, or more than you can lift, a collection from us saves the booking, the permit and the weighbridge.
Cwmavon grew on copper, iron and tin. The English Copper Company works stood around Pantdu, and that site is now the Pantdu housing estate, one of the large post-war estates alongside Cae Glas and Penllyn that give the village its character. Only about a quarter of homes are terraced; the rest are semis and detached houses with gardens, garages and sheds, which is why garden clearance, shed removal and garage declutters make up so much of our work here.
Nearly a fifth of residents are retired and almost a quarter of homes are socially rented, mostly through Tai Tarian and Coastal Housing, with care homes such as Michaelstone Court in the village. When the council cannot help, because the pile is bigger than three bags, includes a shed or garden waste, or needs carrying out of the house, that is what we are for, and every job comes with a waste transfer note.
